News: GruppenTRAINING Album out

The album GruppenTRAINING ist out!
A surging, sizzling, bubbling, and glowing stream of sound, distilled from five concerts of my duo TRAINING with different guests. At each concerts we played the same playful, graphic scores - with extremely different results. The album is made from these recordings.

Veröffentlichung: TRAINING: GruppenTRAINING (2025, self release)

TRAINING: GruppenTRAINING (2025, self release)

Like a scan through mind and body, this album begins. Emerging from a meditative state, one descends step by step into the sonic world of the following 30 minutes – into a terrain that could hardly be more fluid and colorful.
The duo TRAINING has melted five concerts from their 2023 series GruppenTRAINING into a hypnotic trip. Overlaps, collisions, and entanglements abound: rigid-seeming constructs are shattered by the primal scream of bassist Dan Peter Sundland and flow into Rieko Okuda’s trance-like piano playing. Pulsating, mutating grooves arise – born of bars, circles, and strokes, the glowing core of this collective creativity. The Korean gongs of Hyo Jin Shin and Bo-Sung Kim (Ensemble -Su) carry us from the body’s center to the ecstatic edges of consciousness.
Fourteen musicians of Berlin’s avant-garde gathered to shape these sonic excursions: Els Vandeweyer’s audiophile vibraphone expeditions, Gregoire Simon’s prepared spectral viola, Mike Majkowski’s shimmering endless resonances, Helena Weinstock’s fluttering and Oliver Roth’s tumbling flutes. Andreas Arend on the Lyra Polyversalis, a futuristic baroque instrument. Mascha Juno and Zola Mennenöh restore firm ground beneath our feet with unflinching calm.
In a meticulous, detail-obsessed process lasting a full year, Max Andrzejewski and Johannes Schleiermacher produced this album, which was mastered by Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich.
GruppenTRAINING is a musical melting pot, a color explosion, a surging, sizzling, bubbling, and glowing stream of sound and energy that forges ever-surprising paths.

News: SATISFACTIONACTION is coming

I´ve been working since one year in this: a music theatre installation, to be premiered at Beethovenfest Bonn and at Deutsche Oper Berlin. A huge thing for me. Music for 8 musicians, an amateur choir. Live video and a room by Lukas Zerbst, choreography by Sylvana Seddig. Dramaturgy by Maria Buzhor. The piece is all about oddly satisfying states of mind.

Rezension: Best of Contemporary Classical - Peter Margasak - Bandcamp

Max Andrzejewski is one the most open-minded and versatile drummers in Berlin—a strong improviser and bandleader who embraces a wide array of practices, from the jacked-up electronic grooves of Training to the more elliptical post-bop of Hütte. In recent years he’s increasingly devoted his attention to composing music for other ensembles. Summen is a treat because it blends those two practices, featuring his nimble kit playing with a string quartet drawn from members of Hamburg’s Ensemble Resonanz. The centerpiece of this new collaboration is a work titled “Das Summen Meiner Teile,” or “the hum of my parts,” tongue-in-cheek wordplay that reflects on a life spent making music. The core notes of the piece were “composed” by Andrzejewski when he was just seven years old, scrawling a sequence of notation on staff paper while visiting his grandparents. Inspired by the unselfconscious play of his own daughter, he constructed this work using a handful of those notes. There is a delightful playfulness to the music, a fizzy jumble of terse, often staccato lines that both shape simple melodic patterns and build a wonderfully jagged rhythmic foundation. The four strings and the composer’s drum kit playing all fit together like a complex puzzle, building velocity and depth, only to be interrupted halfway through by a kind of fractured breakdown that gradually coalesces into something ruminative, with all of the musicians chanting wordless vocals as it fades away. The release is rounded by two shorter pieces based on the notion of swarms, with bowed and plucked strings and percussive utterances opening up and pulling together, in liquid-like swells.

Max Andrzejewski & Ensemble Resonanz: SUMMEN (2025, SN Variations)

"When I was seven, I drew notes on a piece of paper at my grandparents’ small flat in Bonn. Notes thrown randomly onto paper (obviously no Wunderkind!), which my grandfather Czeslaw titled Opus2. Das Summen meiner Teile (word play like the hum of my parts as in the sum of my parts) is composed from a small excerpt of these childishly drawn notes. I wanted to take seriously what emerged from playing - as set source material. On the one hand, out of fascination with the clarity and seriousness with which my own daughter plays. But above all out of gratitude for my family influence, the encouragement in these moments that probably made me who I am - the sum of my parts.
The piece was commissioned by the Beethovenfest Bonn in 2022 and was performed by the great Ensemble Resonanz string quartet and myself on the drum set. A year later, I began to develop the piece further and brought it into the form that can now be heard on the recording.
The other two pieces are swarm-like compositions. For me, studying the way swarms work is a beautiful allegory for family dynamics, for paths taken together, for splits...
The album SUMMEN merges my two fields of work that always balance each other: on the one hand, composing so-called contemporary music and on the other, improvising as a drummer. I was lucky to have already worked in both roles on other projects with the Ensemble Resonanz - and again it was amazing working with them on my music.“

TRAINING & Ruth Goller: threads to knot (2024, Squama Recordings)

Berlin-based duo TRAINING team up with bassist Ruth Goller for their new album ‘threads to knot’. Frenetic free-jazz is sitting next to post-rock riffs and looming microtonal atmospheres.
The record was written in a truly collaborative effort, adapting the concept of ‘cadavre exquis’, the popular drawing game: One person would start writing a few notes before passing it on to the next, revealing only the very last note, with which the composition continues.
TRAINING is comprised of drummer Max Andrzejewski and sax player Johannes Schleiermacher, whose last album ‘Three Seconds’ saw them collaborate with Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich.
Ruth Goller, who has been hailed by the Guardian for her 'thunderous bass-guitar hooks' and has made waves this year with the release of her second album 'Skyllumina'. She’s also known as a live performer with Kit Downes, Alabaster de Plume, Melt Yourself Down among others.

These days I´m finishing the recordings for an album with works for string quartet (the great Ensemble Resonanz) and improvised drums (played by me). It all started with the commissioned work "das Summen meiner Teile", premiered at Beethovenfest Bonn 2022. I reworked and extended that piece a lot the last months and added two more improvisatory pieces. The album will release later this year.

Rezension: Peter Margasak - Nowhere Street

Max Andrzejewski´s Hütte has just dropped a terrific new album that pares things down to the core ensemble for the first time since its 2012 debut album. (...) It’s not just the lack of guests, but a built-in formal constriction to the compositions, which tend to levitate in place. In a way this quality could be an indirect legacy of the time-freezing of Bill Dixon, mentioned above. The drummer is very active, creating a generous flow of shifting detail, quicksilver accents, and, most of all, fractal time, but his playing never draws attention to itself. Instead it does what it needs to do, offering a bubbling cauldron of rhythm for his bandmates to work with.
His tightly-coiled tunes emit a gentle optimism, with subtle hooks burrowing quickly into the memory. The grooves he carves with Lang are marvels of exploratory concision, as the musicians seek out every possible rhythmic permutation. The music references rock more than jazz, calling to mind expansive combos like Radian and Talk Talk in their measured experimentation, with Andrzejewski applying some of Martin Bradlmayr’s language to the slack drag of Jim Black. Hoffmann gets some solo space, but his greatest achievement is the placement and articulation of written parts, especially on a piece “Risse,” where clean chordal strums move around the stereo field in woozy syncopation, and thanks to overdubbing he ads zigzagging unison accompaniment to Schleiermacher’s sax lines before they break apart for simultaneous solos.

Rezension: Ulrich Steinmetzger - Jazzpodium

Veröffentlichung: Max Andrzejewski´s Hütte: REDUCE (2023, Fun in the Church)

Max Andrzejewski´s Hütte: REDUCE (2023, Fun in the Church)

The floating Hütte

We absolutely have to call Max Andrzejewski, born in 1986, one of the most important protagonists of the young German experimental music world. Whether as a drummer or as a composer - in an ensemble, he likes both at the same time - he has been exploring the worlds between contemporary classical music and jazz, between experimental rock and minimalism for years.
If there is something like a permanent fixture in the wealth of his award-winning releases and projects, then it is certainly his quartet HÜTTE: The band, founded in 2011, with Andrzejewski as the composing drummer, the saxophonist Johannes Schleiermacher, the guitarist Tobias Hoffmann and the bassist Andreas Lang, is really outstanding and won the new German Jazz Prize in 2013.

Now in September 2023, if you want to include their Robert Wyatt tribute record from 2019, the fifth HÜTTE album entitled "Reduce" will be released.
Robert Wyatt is definitely a good reference when it comes to the new recordings, as would the late works of Talk Talk, Arthur Russell or Miles Davis on "In a silent way", but also minimalists like Kali Malone or Jakob Bro.
Rarely have Andrzejewski and his band been heard so accessible, reduced and floating. So, in terms of Mark Hollis' definition, we're almost dealing with pop music here. In any case, the fellow musicians seem to feel at ease in their bandleader's newly prescribed minimalism.
"The pieces arose from a need to go into intermediate or floating states, for loops, for reduced material – to immerse the listener, to make them calm down a bit and “immerse” them in a present state" Max says and poses the question to himself about his most recent endeavors in his Hütte (Hut) "Is this an escape from the state of the world or am I doing this because I am getting old?"

The basic compositional arrangement, in fact, often are only very small loops with minimal shifts that Max and his band use to captivate us so much in the 9 tracks of Reduce.
Some parts are distilled from Max's compositions for contemporary classical music - ensembles - and turn into more improvisational music.

Andrzejewski comments on the project as follows:
"The need for this reduced music certainly also stems from my excessive work as a composer of contemporary chamber music in recent years - the idea of 'freeing' the musical material, of illuminating it from the 'other side'."

But of course, the individual, virtuoso expression of all HÜTTE members on their instruments and the fact that they have been a band for over 10 years playing together, are extremely important factors for the great intensity on this album.

By the way, the album title can also be read politically: Reduction as a means of de-growth, pulling out of the delusion of an turbo-capitalistic economy built on short-attention-spans and the urgent questions about sacrifices that each one of us – no matter if we inhabit administrative offices or not - can do to keep our planet habitable.

There will be no physical CD or LP for the album! Instead Fun In The church releases, a strictly limited, hand-numbered screen-printed poster (with download code!) by the Berlin based designer Moritz Borchardt.
Fans that are so inclined are welcome to hang this poster in their own hut!

I finished a piece for symphony orchestra. Quite a ride. "Exzellente Orchesterlandschaft", Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie and their conductor Ewa Strusinska commissioned an 8 Minute piece, loosely based on the sorbian tale of Krabat and the structural change in the Lausitz area. It's called „změna“ (this means „transition“ in sorbian). The piece will be premiered on the 15th July open air at Bärwalder See and on 16th July in the theatre of Bautzen, conducted by Ewa Struwinska.

News: This fall. "Prelude to disappearing" and Hütte!

After exciting weeks with two composition premieres, the next one is happening in Hannover:
"Prelude to disappearing" - a commission for a 15" piece for the chamber orchestra "Orchester im Treppenhaus" in Hannover. A collaboration with the multimedia artist Claudix Vanesix Figueroa (Peru) based on Debussy´s "L´après-midi d´un faune". Dealing with the topics nature, exploitation, extinction and our technical world. Premiere on Oct 27th! ...............................................................
Also, I´m very happy to announce that in November, we´ll record a new album with my long time quartet Hütte: Back to our roots - a quartet album. Johannes, Tobias, Andi and me. Simple music, loops. Little material, lots of freedom. Possibly much more silent than what we used to do in the beginning... Or at least much more dynamic... ...............................................................
Also: a trailer is up of my project "Happy end, renatured" that had its premiere in may 2022 at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNeqoGGWv7g

News: Composition premieres this fall

I have three exciting composition premieres coming up this fall.

On 2nd September my piece "Das Summen meiner Teile" for String quartet and improvising drums will be premiered at Beethovenfest Bonn. It´s a commission by Beethovenfest and the piece is played by the great Ensemble Resonanz. I play the drums myself. The piece is based on few bars of music that I "composed" at my grandparents small flat in Bonn when i was seven years old . A very personal piece.

Then, two weeks later, on 17th September, a music theatre piece, commissioned by Kammermusikfestival Regensburg, will have its premiere at a night club in Regensburg. It´s called "An den Rändern der Risse ... in der Lücke das Grün" with music for flute, viola, two guitars (both electric and acoustic), double bass, electronics and a (movement) choir of acting students. This is a collaboration with the director Georg Schütky and 14 acting students from AdK Regensburg. We worked with them already in several workshops and it will be exciting!

The third premiere will happen in October 27th in Hannover. With the great Orchester im Treppenhaus. Will tell you more about this later.

Rezension: TAZ - Sophie Emilia Beha

TRAINING & John Dieterich: Three Seconds (2021, Fun in the Church)

Johannes Schleiermacher - sax, flute, Buchla Music Easel, composition
Max Andrzejewski - drums, voice, composition, synth
John Dieterich - guitar, piano, voice, composition, mix, master

»Go outside. Stay inside. Look at the closest thing to you. A random, banal event. Ants being busy, grasses being automatically taken care of and electric divinations of every second object-machine companion on your desk. What you see is not what you see. Neither is what you see what you hear. Coming together of multiplicity of multiple affairs. What we hear is the heated-up bodies of uncountable ants crawling on what we call the earth – a composition and decomposition of countless microscopic movements? Or we hear the touch of the wind and the leaves of an ancient tree who has seen and smelled who knows what?« (Işıl Karataş)

Corona-Winter 2020. The great TRAINING are to play a concert at Jazzfest-Berlin together with John Dieterich from Deerhoof. Based on field recordings that they have previously recorded and processed into loops. 3 Seconds Loops. Three seconds. But the concert could not take place as planned due to Corona. John Dieterich was not allowed to travel from the USA to Berlin. The festival could not take place with a live audience anyway.
But an extraordinary performance took place. John sent more audio tracks to Berlin, and TRAINING processed them live in the streaming concert. It resulted in one of the most gripping, intense streaming gigs of last year.
From the described live sessions, but also from the teaser tracks released in advance by Jazzfest Berlin, an album has now been created! The accompanying video work is by Işıl Karataş - she accompanied the whole project with her visual worlds.

We would like to sincerely thank Jazzfest Berlin and rbbKultur for their co-operation, which made this fantastic, space-, time- and pandemic-spanning project possible in the first place. And Goethe Institute for their support.

My school friend Marco Mlynek and me finally have a project together again. COMPANION SONGS. Marco simply writes some of the best guitar songs ever (I find), we both sing a bit, and I get to improvise a lot. Perfect.
The EP is out next week on the Label Akkerbouw Records and was mixed and mastered by Daniel Freitag.

I’m not sure that identifying this album as a jazz gospel opera about organic food is enough to prepare you for the strangeness that is the music of Max Andrzejewski. This isn’t the drummer’s first experiment with a choir. His 2014 release Hütte und Chor was a vehicle he used to cross-pollinate his typically hyperactive sound with the joyfulness of voices singing to the heavens as one. On his newest, Andrzejewski reaches the next plateau by providing his jazz choir with a unifying vision. By bringing focus, he magnifies both the beauty of the construct and the intensity of the resulting euphoria. That’s also why the album’s bizarre personality becomes comfortingly familiar before the last note of “Salt” has played. Along the way, “Hunter Gatherer” adds some folk to the mix, and “Eat What You Are” brings some Motown sway, and the blues breaks out on “Full,” and all of it flows seamlessly into Andrzejewski curious jazz gospel blend.

"Love it or hate it.

...Max Andrzejewski, Hutte und Chor: I’m still not sure what to make of this one. There’s drummer Andrzejewski’s Hutte quartet, consisting of himself, guitarist Tobias Hoffmann, bassist Andreas Lang, and saxophonist Johannes Schleiermacher. To this, he adds a five-part choir of vocalists that all behave as soloists… but together. It’s a fusion of modern post-bop, indie-rock, and theatre. Tempos range anywhere from incessantly spasmodic to cheerful jaunts through the park. Melodies can’t sit still and change their shape in the middle of an expression. Dramatic changes in scenery are balanced against a healthy sense of humor. This music is wild and thrilling and different and is overflowing with personality. I keep listening and listening and I’m still not sure what to make of it. But it makes me smile and the ensemble scores all kinds of points for pouring their heart into something so remarkably inventive and risky. Unbounded creativity. Pick of the Week.

Rezension: Martin Laurentius, Jazzthing 104, Juni 2014
